Why does my car shake or vibrate when I brake?

Shaking or vibration when you brake is most often caused by warped or unevenly worn rotors, which prevent the brake pads from gripping smoothly. You'll usually feel it through the steering wheel or brake pedal, and it tends to get worse the longer it's left. Bring your vehicle to Import Autowerks in Quincy and we'll check your rotors and brakes to find the source of the vibration and get you stopping smoothly again.

My brake pedal feels soft or sinks to the floor. Is that dangerous?

Yes, a soft or sinking brake pedal should be treated as urgent, because it usually means there's air in the brake lines or a fluid leak affecting your ability to stop. Your brakes rely on steady hydraulic pressure, and when that pressure drops, stopping distance increases fast. Don't wait on this one, have your vehicle looked at by the expert team at Import Autowerks right away so we can find and fix the cause before it becomes a safety risk.

Do my brakes just need pads, or do the rotors and fluid need service too?

It depends on how worn your braking system is, which is why a proper inspection comes first. Pads wear fastest and are often all that's needed, but rotors and brake fluid also wear over time and may need attention to keep your brakes performing safely. When you visit Import Autowerks, we'll inspect the full system and explain exactly what your brakes need and what can wait, so call us at (781) 818-3830 to get started.

In my 26-plus years in the auto industry, proper transmission maintenance has never been more crucial. The transmission is one of the most complex components in an automobile. It has many moving parts—and I mean MANY! Modern transmissions use lighter components while handling higher speeds and greater power demands. Replacing one can potentially cost $15,000 or more. When I worked at a dealership, transmission fluid was considered “lifetime” fluid. However, when the transmission failed, that was considered the end of its “lifetime.” After spending so many years in the independent repair world, I’ve seen transmissions experience a wide range of conditions: extreme heat, high speeds, low speeds, stop-and-go driving, and even years of sitting unused. What causes transmission failure? Many factors can contribute. Fluid eventually breaks down, and leaks can develop. High temperatures and fluid loss are common contributors to failure. At Import Autowerks, we’ve consistently followed strong maintenance practices with our clients. We service more than 1,500 cars per year and typically replace only one or two transmissions annually. The majority of our clients’ transmissions reach more than 150,000 miles. Based on our experience, we believe our focus on preventive maintenance makes a difference. What does that mean for you? The life of a transmission depends on several factors, including the quality of its components, the correct fluid, driving conditions, and maintenance. Proper maintenance can help reduce the risk of problems and extend your transmission’s life. Could it last a lifetime? There are no guarantees, but taking care of it gives it a better chance. Depending on the transmission type and design, our recommended fluid-change intervals are 45,000, 60,000, or 100,000 miles. How many miles do you think your car can go? We believe in starting preventive maintenance early and keeping our clients’ best interests in mind. Thanks for reading! Alvin Lui Import Autowerks

Gasoline Vehicles vs. Electric Cars
February 1, 2025
As innovation accelerates, the automotive world is rapidly evolving, with the debate between gasoline vehicles and electric cars at the forefront. Drawing from personal experience, here's my perspective on the pros and cons of each option. Encountering Electric Innovation My first encounter with a Tesla was a decade ago, and while its speed was impressive, all the bells and whistles . my preference has always been for the sophistication and quality of German automobiles. Speed has never been my primary focus, as there will always be another car that's faster. Both gasoline and electric vehicles have their merits, and I've had the opportunity to experience both. The Case for Gasoline Cars Having spent most of my life around gasoline vehicles, I find that modern gasoline cars remain environmentally friendly. Refueling is convenient and accessible across the country, and the overall cost of repairs is manageable, and reasonable excluding the cost of electronic systems. They can be just as quick as electric cars on the top end. I love to be in control of driving a car vs a car driving me. The Electric Experience Electric cars offer convenience and cost-effectiveness as daily drivers or work vehicles. You might save on gas but insurance cost may be twice as much .However, I once found myself out of state, low on charge, and faced with the choice of parking in a hotel lot or driving 30 minutes to the nearest charging station. While some claim electric cars are maintenance-free, I believe this isn't entirely accurate, as electric car batteries can incur significant high repair costs after 5-7 years. Long Distance Travels With enticing incentives available, electric cars can be an attractive choice. They excel as city cars, but for long-distance travel over 300 miles, additional charging and travel time may be necessary. The world of alternative fuels is ever-changing, and technology offers many options. Ultimately, the choice depends on your lifestyle. My Brother took a gasoline car to a 550 one way trip vs electric car. Electric car had a 3 hour delay. Conclusion In terms of repair costs, both gasoline and electric vehicles balance out when considering insurance, convenience, and longevity. I feel its what ever the right fit for you is. As the automotive landscape evolves, choose what suits your lifestyle and needs best. Trends come and go overnight. My hope is that carmakers will one day combine the greatest technology, quality, and sophistication in modern vehicles, offering the best of both worlds. At Import AutoWerks , we're equipped to support and service both gasoline and electric vehicles, ensuring we're here for you, no matter where the future of automotive innovation leads.
